'Beyond This Town

The air felt warmer when she was around. As if tiny little stars surrounded you, hugging your skin, distracting you from the chilly autumn weather. You wondered if she felt them too.

Based on the goofy grin adorning her face and the way her eyes crinkled at the corners, you figured she did.

She had been following you around town like a lost puppy all day, boasting about this secret spot she just needed to show you. A secret spot just for the two of you, one that overlooks all of Jackson, practically high enough to touch the stars. And now that you were up here, you regretted your earlier suspicions wishing you had come up here sooner. Maybe then you would've been lucky enough to catch the sunset.

But you understood why she was so excited now. The view from the cliff was mesmerizing. Street lights glowing softly under the night sky, the silhouette of the mountains in the distance, the air carried the scent of pine, and you could see the trees below, their leaves a mix of reds and oranges. It was quiet up here, peaceful, and everything felt a little calmer from this high up.

Her small laugh broke the silence between you, soft and a little breathless, as if she couldn't contain her excitement.

"What 'cha thinking about?" She asked, smiling like an idiot as she tilted her head, looking at you happily.

"How annoying you are." You joked, but the affection in your voice betrayed you.

She laughed again louder this time.

“You’re welcome by the way.” She said nudging your shoulder. “I knew you’d love it up here. Figured you could use a break from all the serious mumbo jumbo you got going on.”

You rolled your eyes with a reluctant smile tugging at your lips. “Yeah yeah, don’t let it get to your head.”

“Too late.”

There was a comforting silence that followed after that. The only sound coming from the rustling of the carnelian leaves, the lively town below, and the twinkling of the stars. For a long time neither of you said anything. Enjoying the view before you, pinky fingers intertwined ever so loosely. The touch was almost cathartic, as if it was the only thing tying you down to earth.

The silence was eventually interrupted by the sound of her voice, mellow and melodic.

“One day, I’m takin’ you somewhere even better. Someplace with a real view."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah." Her voice was a lot lower this time. Softer. "Maybe…” She cleared her throat, glancing away for a moment before continuing “Maybe the west coast. Portland? Seattle?”

You turned to her, a little surprised. "You’d really take me all the way to Seattle?"

A warm and tender smile touched her lips, one filled with anticipation and excitement.

"I'd take you anywhere."
